Short Story – Elderly Angel

Ester has always loved Halloween. No matter how old she got, she still decorated her house with skeletons, spider webs, and ghosts. This year was no different. As she put on her angel costume, she chuckled a little at the sight of a wrinkly body in a young person’s costume. She debated taking out her dentures to make it look even worse, but decided she didn’t want to scare the neighborhood children too much.

The clock struck 7 PM and Ester was by the door with a big bowl of candy waiting for the first trick or treaters. She had fallen asleep in her folding chair when the clock struck 8 PM startling her so much that she almost fell. Ester adjusted her glasses to see the time on her old grandfather clock in the foyer. “Where could everyone be?” she muttered, taking a piece of candy out of the bowl and unwrapping it. By the strike of 9 PM, she was ready to call it quits and give up on waiting. Just as she began to fold up her chair, there was a loud knock at the door. Without hesitation and with a huge smile on her face, she quickly swung open the door.

“Trick or Tr…” before she could get the customary greeting out, she was greeted herself by the barrel of a gun.

“I ain’t no tricker treater, lady. This here is an old fashioned robbery.”

The tall man towered over Ester with both hands tightly wrapped around his gun pointed right at her. She had never felt so small and old than she did in that moment. This man meant business and it was obvious what she needed to do. Ester, still holding the folding chair, swung as hard as her arms would let her, colliding with the tall man’s knees. The cracking sound they made would be something that Ester would later think about and smile. For, little old Ester had been her own hero that day.

The police and an ambulance arrived not long after she made the call to 911. She was surprised that the dispatcher could hear her over the wailing coming from the tall man on her front porch. That angel kept herself from going to Heaven that Halloween night, and she was tickled pink about it.
